Mike Juggins

Community Artist

Much of my work in the past is in recognition of the struggle of many young people to succeed in the education system. My own experiences and that of my dyslexic son & daughter has led me to understand what learning is and the many ways it can be achieved.

I have tried to positively influence policy and practice and I feel that I have much to offer as an artist, educator and filmmaker. I strongly believe that each individual has real potential for personal, emotional and intellectual growth through working creatively with the arts across curriculum.

I have worked often with individuals at risk of exclusion or tuned out of learning. My experience of working with such groups of young people has had many positive outcomes, reinforcing my belief that ability follows enthusiasm.

My work on promoting greater understanding and appreciation of dyslexia and visual thinking has helped me develop as an educator.

My own creative practice is a constant base for mutual learning opportunities.

Ideas plus investigation = ability & knowledge

Workshops and Projects

Film Forum: An issue-based process of exploration, communication and filmmaking.

Dyslexia Awareness: I has veast experience of working in collaboration with the major dyslexic organisations and with parents and young people. As a dyslexic adult and father of two dyslexic children, I have first hand knowledge of dyslexia and what it can mean to be dyslexic in today’s society. I have experience as a public speaker at several national and international dyslexia conferences and have travelled as far as Hong Kong and New York to deliver his ideas and advice. Dyslexia awareness sessions are available for staff, parents and students.

Painting: I am a painter I run workshops with groups of young people, demonstrating how I work with colour, using gesture, emotion and my visual intellect. I have many years experience of mentoring and teaching GCSE and key stage 3 students.

Drama, Poetry, Music & Performance: My experience as a freelance stage manager at fringe events enables him to facilitate and direct multi media performances. Whilst working with words, actions and emotions he uses the performing arts to bring alive such learning experience.

Video Editing: The way finished projects are presented is very important. Many young people find post postproduction as creative as script development, acting and animation. This work can only be delivered to small groups but has wide ranging benefits to all involved.

In summary… I am able to work with the school to tailor projects to meet their unique needs. Current fees are £175 per day.
